Background Information
Hi, I'm Philip Liddell, Managing Member of Liddell Consulting. Welcome, I'd like to share a bit of personal background information below. I began my career in telecom in the mid 90s as an RF Engineer. From 2000 to 2012, I was at Cricket Communications where we strived to provide affordable, high quality mobile phone service to a segment of the population that was not being served well by the larger operators. This required us to have a relentless focus on balancing costs, performance and capacity. I am proud to say that we operated some of the most efficient networks in the industry! When I left Cricket in 2012, I was a VP managing engineering and operations for the eastern half of the US.
In 2012, I joined a startup called Infrastructure Networks. We built LTE networks to serve oil and gas customers in remote areas in Texas, New Mexico and North Dakota. It was a fun time that included acquiring the spectrum, building the network (including backhaul into these remote areas), building the engineering and operations team and acquiring and supporting customers. Unfortunately, the oil and gas market took a large downturn a couple of years later and I exited in 2015. I was serving as the COO at the time.
In 2015, I joined up with a couple of past colleagues from Cricket to form a consulting firm called Trilumen Technologies. We were involved in several interesting projects, including FirstNet and helping Sigfox deploy their initial IoT network in the US.
In 2017, I began consulting for Facebook (now Meta) to help operators build wireless networks in remote parts of developing countries in South America, Africa and Asia. I eventually became an employee to focus full time on this work. This was truly fulfilling work as we were literally helping people connect to the internet for the very first time! We helped build an ecoystem around a concept called Network as a Service (NaaS), which involves a neutral host building a single network that can be shared with multiple MNO partners, thus providing access for their customers. I am most proud of the work we did in Peru where we helped form a company called Internet para Todos (IpT), which is a thriving NaaS Operator providing connectivity to the most remote parts of Peru.
I spent about one year helping another startup called Starlight Technologies. We were focused on bringing Starlink services and other integrated access technologies and network management capabilities to enterprise customers in the oil and gas, mining, utilities, manufacturing and logistics markets. I believe Starlink is truly a game changing technology for remote connectivity use cases and I have been very impressed with the test results and production deployments I've seen first hand.
I've since exited Starlight to focus exclusively on what I am passionate about - improving connectivity for remote parts of the world! I am excited to work with old and new clients on challenging use cases ranging from remote consumer networks to remote critical infrastructure operations both onshore and offshore. We are continually getting more and more tools to address the challenges associated with remote communications, including shared spectrum policies, shared network models, advancements in SD-WAN solutions, advancements in edge private LTE solutions and new services like Starilnk. The future is bright!
